Structure  Courses take place in the working environment of a design studio with access to all resources needed to help find individual   solutions to your site and method of construction. The classes are theory and workshop based. Using a mix of theory and practical work , students are encouraged to develop an understanding of the principles and processes involved in self-build, to help understand how to programme your build, the initial stages, preparation, improve analysis and appreciation of both good design, construction, and use of materials. Independent research is promoted through a small amount of home study  each week. Students and tutors work together to articulate ideas and provide valuable feedback to develop the project design and programme from concept through to the finished scheme to produce an outline programme for your project. Topics covered include : Plot finding Making the most of your site Guidelines for the process of planning Construction types, which could be best for you How to work with an architect and builder to get the best from your self-build Typical site programmes What you really need to know before you start and strategies for keeping your project on track Course Summary An introduction to Self-Build Design, whether new build, extension or conversion which will encourage individual thinking about all types of self build design, techniques and materials. The course covers design skills, specification, simple construction ideas, green design and energy saving. An outline of the various processes involved, planning, building regs and working with your builder is also discussed.
